The meeting of the B.E.A.R.S. Comenius project was held in Tuam
from 3rd to 6th november 2010.
The meeting was chaired by Ireland.
Delegations from all five countries attended.
In a pretty little toy shop, in a quiet little village, five bears sat together high up on wooden shelf. The bears were Arturo, Antero, Pysio, Marcel and Setanta, and they were brothers, who were very happy to be together.
One hot summer , many tourists from different countries came to visit the village, and many children visited the pretty little toy shop. Most bought toys to bring home with them. The bears were worried about going away to a new country. Over the summer, one by one, the bears were bought by children from all over Europe.
Pysio was bought by a child from Poland. An Italian child bought Arturo. Marcel was bought by a child on their holidays from France. Finally Antero and Setanta were bought on the same day, Antero by a Finnish child and Setanta by a child from Ireland.
They were very sad to be parting company from each other but excited to be setting off on a new adventure. Each bear promised to write about their new homes and to tell the others about what life was like in their new countries. They made a promise to each other that some day they would all meet again.
Their time together in the pretty little toy shop was over but their new lives were just beginning.
To be continued...
The title of the project is “Bringing Europe Alive through Reading and Storytelling” (BEARS) and bears form the central theme of this project, which focuses on storytelling.
Five bears started their journey at a contact seminar in Durham and have travelled to each of the participating schools. These bears will be the vehicle for information exchange, for cooperation and for creativity. Their story will be the story of the project.
The project has a twofold focus :
The first focus of the proposed project is on the development of literacy through the medium of storytelling. Storytelling touches the heart of children's understanding of the world and through this medium we hope that children will explore the stories of their own locality, learn about their own geographical and historical context, develop their literacy skills in the process and share their stories with their new friends in partner schools.
In so doing, we will address the second focus of the project which is on developing European citizenship through the establishment of contact and friendships with
children in partner schools.
We will be exposed to and learn the stories of our partners and learn about the different social and environmental contexts of these schools and of the children who attend them.
We plan that children will experience the thrill and creativity of jointly creating and collaborating in the creation of a shared story with their partners across Europe.

A story from Finland :
The Fox And The Crayfish
Once upon a time there was a fox. One day the fox was walking by the river. Soon he noticed a crayfish at the bottom of the river and started to laugh. The crayfish heard the fox laughing and asked him what was so funny: “Why are you laughing?” “I am laughing at you!” said the fox. “You look absolutely ridiculous crawling so slowly backwards.”

The crayfish was not happy to hear this. He suggested: “Let’s have a race! I bet I can get to the top of that hill faster than you!” The fox liked the idea because he was sure he would win the race. The crayfish walked behind the fox and added: “I bet I win you even if I let you go first.” The fox was surprised by the self confidence of the crayfish: “Suits me. But you must be out of your mind!”
“Ready, steady, go!” As the race began, the crayfish grabbed the fox by his tail. The fox did not notice it, he just ran as fast as he could to the top of the hill. A meter of two before he got to the top, the fox turned around to see where the crayfish was. As the fox turned, the crayfish jumped from the fox’s tail to the finish line. The fox wondered where the crayfish was and when he turned back he could not believe his eyes. The crayfish looked pleased, he waved his hand and said: “Oh you finally got to the top, too.”
The fox was confused; he could not figure it out how the crayfish got to the top so fast. The crayfish was happy and he never told the fox how he had won the race. The end.
